Holiday Magic at Newport, RI Mansions

There is a long and interesting history behind Newport, Rhode Island. However, the town really gained prominence during America’s Gilded Age. This time period, which lasted from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, was characterized by substantial economic gains by wealthy American families. This economic growth ultimately led to destinations like Newport becoming the summertime playground for these families as they built their massive “summer cottages” by the sea.

Today, the Newport, RI mansions, once the summertime escape for famed families like the Vanderbilts, stand as a testament to Newport’s enduring charm as a seaside destination. Today, the Newport, RI mansions are managed and maintained by the Newport Preservation Society, and they open to the public seasonally for tours and events.

As of the writing of this content, the Newport, RI mansions that are open include The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, and Rosecliff, though other mansions and gardens will be open at various points throughout the year. There are also plenty of interesting historic buildings in Newport, RI worth checking out. This latter list includes houses like Rough Point, the former home of actress Doris Duke.

Though we always recommend the different tours offered by the Newport, RI mansions, the holiday season offers a unique opportunity to experience these gilded destinations. In the coming months, here are some unique tours and events being offered at the Newport, RI mansions.

  1. Sparkling Lights at the Breakers, which will run from November 17 – December 30, will feature a twinkling display of holiday magic on the grounds of The Breakers. There’s a half-mile path that winds along the grounds of this mansion, in addition to holiday treats and warming beverages for purchase.
  2. In addition to the dazzling display of lights outside, there will be three Newport, RI mansions open for the “Holidays at the Newport Mansions” tours. These include The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms. The mansions will feature nearly 30 Christmas trees, festively adorned and designed to complement the theme of each room in the mansions. In the Great Hall of The Breakers, you’ll be treated to a 15-foot-tall poinsettia tree, which is made of 150 poinsettia plants. Decorations will be available for viewing from November 18 – January 1.
  3. For a stunning step back in time, join the Newport, RI mansions for the annual Holiday Dinner Dance at The Breakers on December 16. It’s a black-tie evening, complete with hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a holiday-inspired four-course dinner, followed by lively dancing in the Music Room.
