Explore the Stunning Newport Cliff Walk
The Newport Cliff Walk is one of the most popular attractions in the town of Newport, RI, thanks in part to the architecture enjoyed along this scenic stretch of coastline. It’s here that you’ll find the famed Gilded-Age mansions rising from the rocky shoreline, offering a glimpse into how some of the country’s most famous and wealthiest families once lived.
The Newport Cliff Walk was designated as a National Recreational Trail in 1975 and has been delighting visitors ever since. It’s possible to walk the entire 3.5-mile length of the Newport Cliff Walk in one trip, but you’ll need to plan in around 3 hours for this. You can also break the walk into different segments and work it into the rest of your plans in downtown Newport RI.
The Newport Cliff Walk is bookended on each end by popular beaches. On the north end is Easton Beach, where you’ll find free public parking. On the southern end is Bailey’s Beach, known locally as Reject’s Beach. There is a trolley that operates between the two as well, which makes it easy to get from one end to the other without having to worry about the return trip.
Highlights of your trip along the Newport Cliff Walk include Ochre Court (part of Salve Regina University), The Breakers, Rosecliff, Marble House, and Beechwood, and Rough Point (Doris Duke’s home).
There’s More to Love about Newport RI
Though we’d put the Newport Cliff Walk at the top of any “to-do” list, there are so many more things to do in Newport RI worth mentioning! Here are a few more of our favorites:
- Visit the Newport Mansions and gardens. Only The Breakers, Marble House, the Green Animals Topiary Garden, and The Elms garden are open this summer. The rest remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The complex, known formerly as the Newport Casino, includes a museum, grass tennis courts, and an indoor tennis facility. The Hall of Fame Open returns to Newport this summer from July 11 – 18, and tickets are now on sale!
- Browse the shops along Thames Street, which is the very heart of downtown Newport RI.
- Dine out at delicious Newport Restaurants. We compiled a list of some of our favorites here.
- See Newport from the water, and enjoy a sailing adventure.
