The Newport Art Museum is situated on three acres along the charming Bellevue Avenue. Beautiful red brick lines the sidewalks surrounding the museum, which adds to the appeal of this location. There are two historical buildings that house the museum’s galleries. First, The John N.A. Griswold House was completed in 1864, by architect Richard Morris Hunt. The second building, Cushing Memorial Gallery, was completed in 1920, by Delano & Aldrich Architects.
As you wander through The Newport Art Museum galleries, you can see their featured and growing permanent collections, special exhibitions, and highlighted contemporary, regional, national, and international artists. The artwork on display dates back to the 18th century but also exhibits modern pieces as well. The permanent collection consists of close to 3,000 pieces of stunning art in different forms like; drawings, watercolors, paintings, sculptures, decorative art pieces, and textiles.
The Newport Art Museum currently has multiple exhibitions on display. One unique exhibition is Hair Stories (July 17, 2021-Oct 31, 2021). This exciting exhibition was a collaboration by diverse artists, exploring the important roles of hair in culture, religion, politics, ritual, and identity throughout history and to the present day. ReVision (September 25, 2021-January 9, 2022) by Anna Palakunnathu Matthew is a local artist who teaches at the University of Rhode Island. Her display highlights lesser-known histories and immigration through her photo-based works of art.
