A Day at Brenton Point State Park
Brenton Point State Park is one of a few Rhode Island State Parks near Newport. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy the classic, breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay that bring so many people to the area in the first place. Moreover, Brenton Point State Park offers excellent hiking, fishing, and other exciting things to do.
Brenton Point State Park is most well known for being a midpoint on the famed 10-mile Ocean Drive. Ocean Drive is one of the most popular things to do in Newport, RI, and is best known for its commanding ocean views and the Gilded-Age mansions you’ll enjoy along the way. In fact, Brenton Point State Park sits where one of the grandest estates in Newport, The Reef Estate, once sat. The mansion is now derelict, but you can still climb the observation tower that’s located there for a great view of the ocean.
Brenton Point State Park occupies 89-acres of space on the Narragansett Bay and is a great place to enjoy hiking, birdwatching, picnicking, fishing, and just enjoying the views that stretch out before you. At low tide, it’s a great place to explore Rhode Island’s coastal sea life, and the grassy lawn here is exceptional for flying kites. The Newport Kite Festival is held on the grounds here every July, and this year’s event will be on July 9 – 10, 2022.
