A Day at Brenton Point State Park

There are plenty of great parks and beaches to enjoy in the Newport area, including Gooseberry Beach, Easton’s Beach (First Beach), and Fort Adams State Park. There’s also Brenton Point State Park, which is one of our favorite places to spend a summer afternoon. It’s great to visit for kite flying on a windy day, to admire tide pools at low tide, or just to soak up a few rays of sun on a sunny afternoon. Each July, Brenton Point State Park is home to the popular Newport Kite Festival, too.

Most of all, Brenton Point State Park is a fantastic place to enjoy the quintessential views of Narragansett Bay. This is especially true when sailboats take the waters around Newport. It’s also a great midway place to stop and take a break as you drive the famed 10-mile Ocean Drive, known as one of the most scenic drives in the area.

Aside from the commanding ocean views, Brenton Point State Park is also a great place to take a short hike on the loop trail, do a little birdwatching, and even enjoy some fishing. Importantly, this state park is also the sight where Newport’s Reef Estate once stood. Though this isn’t one of the famed and preserved Newport Mansions, you can still marvel at the now-derelict home and imagine its former grandeur. You can also climb the observation tower that’s located on the former estate grounds, where you’ll find a stunning view of the bay.
